The African Experience:

Chirongo threw the frisbee again...this time a bit more accurate than the last. Still, with a bright smile across his face, he turned to me and asked, "That is good?" I laughed, picked up the frisbee, and threw it well over Chirongo's head...to his delight of course. He again turned to me, this time restating his question as an affirmative: "That is good."

This intercultural exercise took place each afternoon until Chirongo returned home at dusk...walking 2 kilometers along a red dirt road back to his humble homestead. I knew I would see Chirongo again each morning. After all, we were now friends.

Our group - consisting of 13 selfless volunteers - arrived to the rural village of Egu on August 7th, nestled just a few short hours outside of Mombasa in the peaceful African bush of Kenya. Once again, I had joined another service expedition with CHOICE Humanitarian. Our intention was not to "save" the village of Egu...or "rescue" the villagers living therein. Instead, we traveled across the Atlantic to support the villagers in their own progress toward self-sustainable development.

The residents of Egu had determined that an 8-room dispensary (or rural health clinic) was their next greatest need (second to potable water). As a result, we were asked to work with them hand-in-hand throughout the week, all while broadening our global perspectives in the process. In a brief period of just one week, we worked together to clear the land, measure and stake the perimeters, and dig the entire foundation 2.5 feet deep...all without the help of industrial equipment or heavy machinery. Yes, this is what we refer to as authentic manual labor!

Our daily routine was simple. We awoke to a breakfast of passion fruit and mango...and we dined in the evenings with plates full of chapattis and pilau. We worked hard in the mornings...but we slowed down in the afternoons...eventually finding ourselves on the sidelines watching the native men and women chop through dirt without breaking a sweat. The day was not complete without at least one visit to the pit latrine - an experience one must live to understand. Of course, a late night shower was always rewarding for those that dared to bathe naked behind a curtain of dried corn stalks and beneath a pitcher of warm water...all while underneath the gleaming stars of the African sky. Then, it was off to bed on the cement floor of the schoolhouse for some intermittent sleep thanks to the squealing bats overhead. Ahhh...the mornings couldn't come soon enough with its fresh passion fruit and mango.

Although important, the project itself simply served as a catalyst for the deeper intercultural exchange which took place during the week. For some, the most significant experiences occurred away from the project site...during a soccer game, an English lesson, or a cultural celebration of song and dance.

Such was the case for me as I ventured one afternoon outside of camp with the loyal companionship of Chirongo, a local 12-year old boy void of anguish for his surroundings, and instead, full of happiness and curiosity for life. Here is a description of our tour at dusk...off the beaten path in the rural outskirts of Egu:

The sun began to set in the distance, amidst a motionless horizon of native sisel plants and acacia trees. Chirongo and his friends were more than excited to lead me in the direction of the descending sun, along winding trails that curled past towering termite hills and desiccated crops, both of which populated the arid landscape. We encountered multiple homesteads where giggling children and smiling parents gathered outside their modest huts just before we passed...eager to greet us with a warm wave and welcoming "Jambo!"

We arrived to the village watering hole and watched as various women gathered water for their families...often walking great distances of 10 kilometers or more. Adorned in native fabrics of brilliant color, these women approached the subtle ledge, climbed down the rock's surface, and stretched their arms into the water to fill their weathered buckets. In a matter of minutes, the women were back on the trail again...returning home with full buckets of vital water now balanced upon their heads. It is not uncommon for one woman to perform this time-consuming task 3 to 4 times each day.

As a humble observer, I could not help but respect and appreciate the work ethic of these village women and mothers...all of whom performed their maternal duties with a smile. A fellow volunteer and I turned around, still a bit contemplative, just in time to witness the sun disappear behind the massive boulders in the foreground. This brief trek was well worth our time.

After taking a few quick snapshots, I turned around in the other direction to see little Chirongo waiting for me back on the trail. There were no other villagers in sight. He alone was going to lead us back to camp. I couldn't help but smile as I descended the rocks and returned to his side. I held his hand, as he requested, and began walking back...spotting an occasional howler monkey along the way.

Chirongo was still barefoot and unconcerned over the occasional cactus or potential snake. I decided to join him. I kicked off my sandals to feel the fine dust beneath my feet, tickling my instep and leaving a soft powder of red in between my toes. I took a couple more snapshots of our contrasting feet in the dirt. What an experience this had become.

I assumed Chirongo spoke just broken English since our interaction was largely limited to laughter and smiles. When attempting to ask him questions, I often got confused looks in return, accompanied with a perplexing comeback in Swahili. Yet, as the night concluded, Chirongo looked at me and said, "I hope you return one day...with your wife."

I'd love to, Chirongo. I'd love to.

I could go on and on, reflecting for hours over the infinite highlights of this expedition. On a cultural level, I was relieved to see such a high sense of tolerance and civility in the village. After all, both Christians and Muslims lived together in Egu...playing, studying, and working in harmony. Being the month of Ramadan, Muslim families returned home at dusk to break their fast over iftar meals. Yet, there was no division. There was no contention. There was no judgment from either side. It was simply...refreshing.

I soon left the village of Egu and returned to Mombasa for a final night along Nyali Beach. The next morning, as I sat in the white sands of the coastline and stared into the Indian Ocean, I pondered one simple truth that is reassured with each expedition: Those born into greater privilege are also endowed with greater responsibilities to improve the world and help those with greater needs...and that alone should be all that matters.

Reflections of Bolivia...

Imagine entering the barren landscapes of the South American Altiplano. Occasional mud huts dot the arid terrain below a cloudless horizon of endless blue. Blustering winds sweep across immovable boulders. Yellow tufts of grass and straw keep the roaming cattle content. Frigid temperatures bring morning frost, though the afternoon sun dries up fields of scattered potatoes. From a distance, there appears to be nothing of great value just below the towering peaks of the Andes Mountains. Yet, with closer observation - and personal interaction - one realizes the true treasure found here lies within the people...the humble villagers of Bolivia.

This past August, I was again privileged to travel down south with CHOICE Humanitarian and join a service expedition of 32 dedicated volunteers: doctors, nurses, dentists, teachers, and small business professionals. Hot chocolate, soccer games, and altitude sickness united us all throughout the week. Oh, and did I mention a unique sense of humor that deteriorated over time due to exhaustion and cold weather?

We first met together in La Paz and explored this crowded capital that overflows with constant contrasts of colonialism and indigenous roots. First founded in 1548 under the ambitions of Spanish conquistadores, La Paz soon became a major stop in the trade route of silver and tin. Independence from Spain was at last declared in 1825 under the new presidential leadership of Simón Bolivar. Towering snow-capped peaks embrace Nuestra Señora de La Paz at 12,000 feet - creating a "bowl" of cobblestone streets, peaceful plazas, historic chapels, handicraft markets, and flickering lights of hillside slums at dusk. There is an anti-American sentiment among local politicians, but Bolivian citizens reflect a different attitude with their warm smiles and gentle handshakes. We spent our time hunting for bargain souvenirs, feasting on llama and quinoa, and researching the origins of cocaine at El Museo de Coca. Our time here concluded with a proper orientation and a few scoops of rich gelato. Next stop? Huancuyo!

We packed into our vans with a lop-sided tower of luggage balanced on top. We drove out of La Paz and through crowded boroughs where swarms of people congregated around sidewalk vendors selling blackened chicken and black-market accessories. Our interstate soon entered the open landscape, cutting through a redundant terrain of dirt and dead grass shrub. The staggering mountain range of the Andes accompanied our journey until we arrived to our final destination: Huancuyo.

Upon arrival, we shuffled into a quaint concrete building (the village social center) to set up camp for the week ahead. As we prepared our sleeping bags, the village elders seemed a bit apprehensive with our presence there. However, the local children were ecstatic to receive us, eager to touch our hands, hold our cameras, and discover the new entertainment we brought with us: bubbles and frisbees! As the sun descended, we bundled ourselves with warm hats and gloves to protect us from the crisp air. Despite the utter chill of the evening, we were treated with a canopy of brilliant stars that stretched across the sky. It was now time to get some much needed rest as all the service projects were scheduled to begin the next morning.

While numerous workshops and clinics were conducted in several villages across the Batallas district, I was "blessed" to work on another water project (flashback to Guatemala: June 2010). As dentists extracted teeth, I worked on the trenches. As doctors diagnosed arthritis among village women, I still worked on the trenches. And as select volunteers helped families herd their cattle, I was scooping up massive piles of cow dung for household fuel. Hmmm...still not sure how I lucked out on that one.

The village water project was the focus of this CHOICE expedition. Those of us selected to work on this project were assigned to fill the extensive trench that village residents had dug on their own prior to our arrival. As the CHOICE Model of Development explains, villagers are required to contribute their own resources and efforts to a given project when possible. Native families of Huancuyo had committed months to the back-breaking labor required to dig a water trench 2 feet deep into the Andean mountainside.

We had arrived for the next phase of work. We had been invited to Huancuyo to fill that same trench with rock and dirt. Yet, we never imagined what awaited us the first morning of our expedition project. With shovels in hand, we left the village and headed up the mountain. Two hours later into the thinning air, following several false summits up the mountainside, we found the water source and origin of the infamous trench...at 13, 500 feet...overlooking Lake Titicaca (the highest navigable lake in the world). The actual trench was almost 3 miles long! We KNEW that we would NEVER finish filling this trench in just one week!

As village men placed meter upon meter of PVC pipe into the trench, we worked hard right behind them in shoveling large stones and piles of dirt into the open ground. But, we were not alone in our labors. Village men and women - and even small children - utilized handmade shovels to cover the pipe with dirt. Believe it or not, we couldn't keep up with the pace of determined village women...despite swaddled infants on their backs and newborn babies feeding from their breasts. Yes, that is the truth.

To the collective shock of our expedition group, the entire trench was filled and completed...in 3.5 days! I was speechless. And no, the completion was not due to our unique participation. The project was completed due to the collaborative efforts of both sides...laboring together in an inter-cultural exchange of work ethic and mutual support. This is the essence of a true CHOICE expedition.

Now that the trench had been filled, it was time to connect the pipe with the schoolhouse spicket which had been placed weeks in advance. This was to be the site of the official inauguration of the water project...a moment that would celebrate the arrival of potable water to the village of Huancuyo for the first time. We had underestimated the importance of such a celebration. Village women wore their finest - and most vibrant - Bolivian attire...spinning and twirling in a cultural dance that often included our own volunteers! Village leaders gave messages of gratitude, shedding tears for the simple gift of water. And village children, waiting in anticipation, partook of the feast that was placed before them: a complete spread of 15 different potatoes and sauces.

These dear people had waited such a long time for this sacred occasion - to have drinkable water near their homes. The excitement was overwhelming as toddlers splashed in the running water that poured from the spicket. Joy was evident in the weathered faces of villages elders, worn and cracked as a result of the brisk Altiplano air. I could not help but admire such wonderful people. After all, I had served a volunteer mission among the same communities 10 years before.

As a group, we found ourselves on a memorable excursion (post-expedition) to the sacred ruins of Tiahuanaco. First discovered in 1549, this UNESCO World Heritage Site continues to be uncovered through vast excavations. The stone walls and sculpted heads of the temple speak of a pre-Incan empire that dates back to 1500 BC. Once a pilgrimage center centuries before the construction of Machu Picchu, Tiahuanaco is most recognized for its revered Sun Gate - a massive stone portal distinguished for its religious and astronomical symbols sculpted into the arch overhead.

*Prior to embarking on this rewarding expedition, I sailed across Lake Titicaca from the tourist town of Copacabana to the enchanting Isla del Sol (birthplace of Inti - the Incan Sun God). This sacred piece of land hosts several ancient ruins and sacred sites that date back centuries. Quaint hostels and intimate restaurants welcome international guests with roasted llama and red wine. I was soon roaming the rugged trails with a Czech couple, discussing the highlights of Andean culture with thick accents and cameras in hand. We were treated with an enchanting sunset that extended from the Peruvian limits into western Bolivia...then an awe-inspiring sunrise the next morning that illuminated the turquoise waters of Titicaca. A 2-hour return navigation brought me back to the shores of Copacabana, where overzealous street market vendors sold dried potatoes, silver earrings, and a plethora of vibrant Catholic saints and virgins. The entire cost of this brief trip? Just U$30. Based on these pictures? Priceless.

Snapshots of Panama...

A brief stop in Panama (in transit to Bolivia) allowed me to visit this charming nation that bridges Central and South America (connecting Costa Rica and Colombia). From pirate raids to Jesuit missions, smiling locals are eager - and proud - to share their rich historical past with all who visit. I witnessed the crowded concrete jungle of downtown Panama, the approaching cargo ships of the Panama Canal, and the picturesque coastlines and beaches of Calzada de Amador. Guatemala Reflections...

I returned from Guatemala less than a month ago. Yet, the experience seems so distant now that I am engulfed - once again - with a plethora of email messages, voice mails, and project deadlines. I have at last written the following article to paint a comprehensive picture of this recent CHOICE expedition to Guatemala. Sure, I returned home to a pile of bills and a pending decision to attend graduate school...but I also returned home feeling more at peace, knowing that I had just dedicated a valuable week to a worthwhile cause.

We departed our hotel and ventured more than 10 hours into the scenic jungles and verdant cloud forests of eastern Guatemala. Our valiant van carried us across the tranquil waters of Lake Izabal, through the flea markets of El Estor, and up winding roads that wrapped around lush hills dotted with coffee plantations.

Thus begun our CHOICE expedition on June 13th. Our group consisted of 18 service-minded volunteers: fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, friends, students, and co-workers. We left behind our laptops, cell phones, and watches...thus abandoning the constraints of pressing deadlines and strict schedules. This was going to be a week of selfless service and personal reflection thousands of miles from home.

The paved road became a gradual path of rugged terrain as we ascended toward the villages of the Polochic region. Gravel soon replaced the ease of asphalt just as intermittent rainfall turned roadside dust into unforgiving mud. Cheerful families waved to us from the windows of their humble homes as we continued up the hill before coming to a final stop.

We stepped out of our van and stretched our fatigued bodies. A small group of curious villagers had gathered to greet us upon arrival, though the village itself was still a 1-hour walking distance uphill. Without hesitation, village men with smiling faces grabbed our backpacks and hurried up the hillside as sunlight began to fade. We followed—far behind—along a broken stone path lined with oversized palm leaves and towering banana trees. At last, the vegetation cleared and revealed a gleeful crowd of giggling women and children gathered in the dark. Welcome to Chirixquitzac.

We entered Chirixquitzac as the first international volunteers since 1997. Still, village toddlers felt comfortable enough to hold our hands and stare at their gleaming portraits taken with our digital cameras. A small percentage of the 500 village residents spoke basic Spanish, though all others communicated in the native Q’eqchi dialect. Despite the assumed cultural differences between North American volunteers and indigenous Mayan families, nothing seemed to be lost in translation. We were delighted to be in Chirixquitzac…and Chirixquitzac was ecstatic to receive us.

Our entire week would consist of hard work, recreation, and friendships. We did not just bond within our group of CHOICE volunteers, but we reached out and unified ourselves with the endearing villagers of Chirixquitzac. We even shared a common passion for soccer during afternoon pick-up games. The villagers no longer seemed to notice the twisting ravine that divided the field, though I almost collided with a team of wallowing pigs and ducks as I ran toward a makeshift goal of tree branches!

At first, our project appeared simple: we would dig the initial trenches of a village-identified water project. For generations, village women have scaled the mountain trails in search of fresh spring water located at higher elevations. Such time-consuming trips allowed mothers and wives to fill their ceramic jugs with just enough water to heat a pot of vegetables or wash a small pile of clothes. The villagers had invited us to work hand-in-hand with them to bring water to the village for the first time. What a humbling honor and opportunity.

Each morning, with a stomach full of corn tortillas and fresh mango, we grabbed our handmade picks and shovels before trekking further up the mountain to our project site. While some groups had the pleasure of working in the shade, I struggled to avoid the suffocating heat from the sun overhead. While others were blessed with damp soil, I was blessed with solid bedrock…and a pile of broken picks due to poor gringo technique! Our group of dedicated volunteers took frequent breaks, with water bottles in hand, and watched in amazement as village men removed boulders and “cleaned up” our trenches—all without breaking a sweat!

The water project allowed us to better understand the trials and obstacles others often face in seeking the basic needs of life. Further perspective was given as we ventured on a midweek “ecological tour” up a surrounding mountain peak. The climb was tiresome, resembling a vertical staircase of mud with miniature footholds. The humid climate and enormous insects made the hike more interesting. As we reached the summit and overlooked the village far below, we posed the question amongst ourselves: “What is their poverty?” The general consensus was clear. The people of Chirixquitzac did not have luxurious homes, expensive cars, or lucrative bank accounts. Yet, these same people did have something much greater: happiness, camaraderie, hope, an astounding work ethic, a deep appreciation for life, and a profound connection with nature.

An eruption of thunder and torrential rain disrupted our group discussion and forced us back down the mountain. A handful of shoeless children led us down to safety—the same children that assigned me the nickname of “Rambo” earlier in the week.

That evening, we returned to the village church to rest (with inquiring onlookers peeking through the windows). As we stretched our tired bodies across foam pads and sleeping bags, the humming of the gas generator came to an abrupt stop, turning off the few dangling light bulbs overhead. All was black—except for the intermittent flickering of fireflies in transit from one window to another. I drifted off to sleep that night as I pondered the question: “What is my poverty?” What a thought-provoking subject for us all.

Our CHOICE expedition concluded the final night with a festive village celebration as hesitant mothers and children joined us in dancing to the piercing rhythms of a nearby marimba. Afterward, village elders wept and expressed their gratitude to CHOICE for our commitment to help others rise above the constraints of impoverished conditions. I was honored to translate those words for the volunteers of our group. A sacred Mayan ritual soon followed before we retired to the village church one last time.

I joined CHOICE in September 2009 as the new Director of Expeditions. This was my first CHOICE expedition to Guatemala. Years of international business and travel had prepared me for the job responsibilities ahead, though I never imagined such a powerful and meaningful experience in Central America. This past trip renewed a personal connection with the simpler things of life—similar to what I first learned a decade ago while serving a humanitarian mission in Argentina. Mexico Through My Eyes...

This past week I had the privilege to travel with CHOICE Humanitarian to central Mexico and visit the developing villages outside Guanajuato. As the Director of Expeditions, I was able to meet with village residents and discuss current projects and accomplishments...and I was amazed. At a time when our nation is disputing the immigration policies along our southern borders, I must take a moment to recognize the solid work ethic and determination of our southern neighbors in rural Mexico. While brief, this vital trip provided me the chance to connect with new friends and landscapes. I felt invited...I felt safe...I felt right at home.

The trip was designed to introduce new CHOICE board members to the powerful development work taking place in the remote communities of Guanajuato. We flew down on a private jet from Salt Lake to Mexico - sitting "shotgun" is so much more impressive at 20,000 feet!

Once in Mexico, our local directors led us to multiple villages where we witnessed the impact of CHOICE Humanitarian firsthand. We traversed rugged terrain, climbed rock-laden hillsides, and drove along dirt roads lined with towering cacti and roaming mules. Native villagers welcomed us with warm smiles and firm handshakes...eager to show us their new schoolhouses, chapels, and goat cheese production facilities! Fields once desolate now host village preschools. Land once barren is now home to water cisterns and pipes that link villages to potable water sources for the first time ever.

The best part? CHOICE did not build these structures...the villagers did. In fact, CHOICE has empowered and mobilized these villagers to believe in themselves and purse sustainable projects and essential skills that will lead to true self-reliance and high-impact development. These wonderful people were proud of what THEY had accomplished in pursuit of a better quality of life. We were simply there to encourage them and admire their work. What a humbling and memorable experience.

As for the goat cheese? Exquisite! The local women's cooperative of Tamaula has created a small business venture utilizing the abundant goat milk available in the village. A combined expedition with Feel Good World will arrive to Tamaula this weekend to paint and finish the new production facilities...working hand-in-hand with the villagers themselves!

We concluded this powerful international venture in the colonial masterpiece of Guanajuato capital. Established in 1554 under Spanish control, Miguel Hidalgo would later promote the Mexican independence movement from here in 1810. Narrow cobblestone streets criss-cross the heart of downtown, zig-zagging in between pastel-colored homes and exquisite monasteries. An underground tunnel system once used to channel the Guanajuato River now serves as a complex labyrinth of bus stops and highways. Silver jewelry and precious pottery stock local craft markets, while authentic tacos de carne asada are best served from a roadside stand with a tall glass of horchata.

As I first mentioned, I felt right at home in Mexico. It felt as if I was in a familiar place...somewhere I've been before. Ahhh...there's a sign I know far too well :)

Once again, Argentina graces the pages of Travel + Leisure magazine (Feb 2010 issue). Amidst a luxurious list of 30 Romantic Dream Trips, Buenos Aires is featured with its "French-colonial buildings" that populate the "posh Recoleta neighborhood". In fact, the new Algodon Mansion has just opened its doors to world travelers seeking wine-inspired spa treatments and rooftop tango lessons at sunset. Romantic indeed.

Just one month prior (Jan 2010 issue), T+L released its list of the World's 500 Best Hotels. To no surprise, 8 of Argentina's most distinguished properties were featured. Our personal pick in Buenos Aires would have to be the luxurious Alvear Palace. As for Patagonia, Llao Llao Resort continues to be the landmark gem in Bariloche. These deluxe 5-star properties range from $250 to more than $1000 per night.

As for the negative news, Argentina now requires a $131 tourism tax for all American travelers arriving into Buenos Aires through Ezeiza International Airport. Following months of government discussion - and debate - this tax went into effect on December 20th, 2009. The tax (termed a "reciprocity fee") is equal to the visa processing fee Argentines have paid since 2002 before traveling to the United States. It seems fair...but is it the right time considering the global economic situation? Time will tell.

On a lighter note, there's a little something on the eastern side of the Andes that makes the tourism tax a little easier to handle. So...sit back, relax, and let Imagine Argentina Travel handle all the details.

This past weekend, CHOICE Humanitarian celebrated its 2009 Fundraising Gala in Salt Lake City, Utah. With 700 supporters in attendance, the event was an absolute success and 100% of all donations received will be used to fund projects and critical needs throughout regions of Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

Following approval from the United Nations, this provocative dance of southern South America has earned the official UNESCO seal of approval. While the birthplace of tango is still disputed between Argentina and Uruguay - in part due to the undetermined birthplace of legend Carlos Gardel - both nations came together last month in a mutual sentiment of gratitude and excitement. Now popular with mainstream television audiences, el tango has flourished in both Buenos Aires and Montevideo since the late 1800s...fusing bodies across milonga dance floors through sensual movements and sultry music. Travelers can witness this dance for themselves while strolling the Florida Street shopping district or perusing the famous cobblestone corners of El Caminito.

Mercedes Sosa

Mercedes Sosa, considered the "Voice of Latin America", has died in Buenos Aires at the age of 74. Born in San Miguel de Tucumán - where we first met in 2002 - Sosa was known for her estilo folclórico...and admired for her opposition to the military regime that overthrew the government of Argentina in 1976. A previous post regarding her powerful music and background can be found HERE.

Tania: Before I was married, I imagined this song as a lullaby for my future son. I would sing "Duerme Negrito" - Sleep Little Dark One - as I would rock him to sleep each night. I imagined him with dark skin and lots of dark hair...but Dallin is the complete opposite! While Dallin's actual lullabies are a vast selection of songs that we love, this was our song before he was born. I learned this song when I was around 14...and I planned to use it as a way to share my love of Mercedes Sosa with my children. I'm so sad that she is gone, but I know her legacy and music will live in my life forever. I hope to keep both her memory and music in the lives of our kids!

Pride of Argentina...

It is not often that a triumphant athlete carries the pride and joy of an entire nation upon his shoulders. Following Juan Martín del Potro's astonishing win over Roger Federer in the 2009 US Open final, the pride of Argentina was rekindled to the fullest...with celebrations, smiles, and tears splashing local newspapers and television broadcasts across the nation. For a country that has struggled with multiple political and economic challenges, del Potro must feel a righteous sense of pride as he has lifted the heads and hearts of millions back home in Argentina...in Buenos Aires...in the small town of Tandil. Por lo tanto, felicitamos no solo a Juan Martín del Potro, pero también a todo el pueblo argentino.

Considered the George Washington of southern South America, General José Francisco de San Martín was the chief figure in liberating Argentina, Chile, and Perú from Spanish control. Born in Argentina in 1778, San Martín led a life of military greatness before relinquishing his authority to Simón Bolívar - who would continue the further liberation of northern and central South America. Named "El Padre de la Patria" (Father of the Fatherland), San Martín relocated to Europe in his later years and died on August 17, 1850.

His greatest act of courage was the Crossing of the Andes between 1816-1817, in which San Martín led a faithful Army of the Andes from Mendoza to Chile - crossing over the rugged and dangerous peaks of the Andes Mountains. Following this ordeal, San Martín and his soldiers won the decisive Battles of Chacabuco and Maipú.

For those who have visited Argentina, you should be familiar with General San Martín. He graces the majority of the nation's central plazas - riding upon his horse and often pointing towards the west. Most cities in Argentina claim a San Martín Park, San Martín Avenue, or San Martín Plaza.

Tania and I have been fortunate to visit such landmarks from north to south during the past decade. From Parque San Martín in Salta to the great Museo de San Martín in Mendoza; from the tomb of San Martín in Buenos Aires to the quaint village square of San Martín de los Andes in Patagonia. So, I came across these images in our photo collection. While we might not ever post each photo taken abroad, we sure would like to! I think there are some photographs that simply capture a unique scene at a specific moment in time...an image and moment that might not ever be repeated. I seek landscapes and places...while Tania prefers people and faces.

This is Potrerillos, a quaint village in the Andean foothills just outside Mendoza...driving towards Chile. As the water level rose during the winter months of 2008, the barren trees appeared to float across the river's surface. Just an incredible sight...and the right moment for our NIKON d50 SLR camera.

I was once a dedicated artist, working in illustration and graphic design. While I no longer use pens and pencils, I find myself evolving into a digital camera artist. Basically, God paints the canvas before us...then we simply frame it with the click of a button. Easy enough, right? Such images are also available on our website: Imagine Argentina Travel.

Now, I'm no Ansel Adams...but I figure these shots are good enough for now.

What Do We Miss Most?

This has been a long post in the making...

Since returning home to Utah last month, we have been overwhelmed with those comforts that now surround us once again: peanut butter, ranch dressing, fruit smoothies, reliable customer service, and coupons. At the same time, we profoundly miss Argentina...its lifestyle...its traditions...its people.

We arrived to Mendoza in Feb 2008 with professional and personal goals. However, we were soon plagued with challenges first underestimated before leaving the United States. Overwhelming at times, such trials were alleviated with the help and support of true friends...who were mere acquaintances to begin with. This is something I admire of the Argentine culture - we're in this together, so let us help one another. While some of our professional goals were not met, we did exceed our expectations regarding those eternal memories soon to be formed with friends and family members.

Now back home, we have been asked several questions regarding our international experience. Yes, it was hard. Yes, we loved it. Yes, it was difficult to leave. Yes, we would recommend it to others!

We have been asked about our furniture in Mendoza - what did you do with it all? Having purchased new appliances, electronics, tables, dishes, and mattresses in 2008, we simply did what we felt was right - we gave it all away to loved ones without thinking twice. The more you give, the more you receive...in order to continue giving.

Tania and I were fortunate to serve in the youth programs of our local LDS congregation. Between the two of us, we hiked the Andean foothills, baked oatmeal cookies, taught football (not soccer), explored the zoo, made scrapbook cards, and taught classes...all among the young men and women of Godoy Cruz, Mendoza. As a counselor in the bishopric, I later continued such efforts while also learning and meeting the needs of older members. No matter the economic differences or challenges among us, we each deserve a chance - or multiple chances - to develop our talents and become self-reliant...often with the assistance and encouragement of others.

As we prepared to depart from Mendoza that warm Tuesday afternoon in May, Tania and I stood in the airport terminal with our 8 oversized suitcases, 1 stroller, 1 kennel, 1 child, 1 dog, and 2 heavy hearts. However, there beside us were several members of our congregation - the same ones who sang "God Be With You Till We Meet Again" just two days prior in our church services. Warm embraces, encouraging smiles, and streaming tears defined those last few moments...and then we were gone.

When times get tough, some of us can pack up our bags and go somewhere else. Others are required to face and overcome such tough times. When new ideas and ambitions enter our hearts, some of us can embark on new adventures. Others are required to dream...and nothing more. This happens worldwide. Throughout our lives, I hope we all can provide opportunities to those that dream...and to those in drastic need.

Above and beyond the mouth-watering steak, I feel the greatest aspect of our trip was time with friends and family. It was an honor to celebrate holidays and birthday dinners together at last...despite the blazing sun on Christmas morning! Tania and I - plus Dallin - share a profound love and respect for those individuals that looked out for us in Argentina. I especially feel a great deal of admiration towards Tania's parents...two humble Chileans that have embraced me since 2002. Gracias a todos ustedes.

So, what other things do we miss about Argentina? To begin, here are a few photos of our arrival at the first hotel in Feb 2008...followed with bits and pieces of our lives abroad:

We miss Sol y Luna: Dallin's pre-school where he attended each morning three blocks from home. Tania took him each morning...I picked him up at noon. His teachers were wonderful and the 2008 graduation show was spectacular!! The theater even had hired paparazzi to take pictures of all the costumes!

We miss Beltrán y Tucumán: The corner address of our new apartment in Bombal Sur of Godoy Cruz. We had everything right within our reach - baker, butcher, barber, etc. We even had our own vegetable stand, pizza parlor, and bootleg video store right next door. We will forever miss the repeated phrase of "la esquina de Beltrán y Tucumán" each time we climbed inside a taxi.

We miss colectivo 8-104: We did not have a car. And when taxis were too expensive, we took the green and yellow bus that stopped right in front of our apartment...the 8-104. The bus took us from home, to the main plaza, to the bus terminal, and back. Several different drivers had this route, and each one decorated the inside of their bus with colors of Boca, colors of River, decals of Jesus, or disco mirrors. We miss the teenagers blasting their cumbia music for all to hear...while the grandmothers held their groceries tight until their stop.

We miss Carrefour: Our local market was just four blocks down the road. We walked there at least three times a week (protests pending) to purchase drinkable yogurt, powdered milk, Nestum (infant cereal), fideos, salsa, and of course...Baggio Pronto (the greatest fruit juice created by man). The manager knew Dallin...the cashiers knew Tania...and the butcher knew us all :)

We miss las plazas: The central squares that united all neighborhoods, towns, and downtown districts. Each plaza carried a unique characteristic: flowing fountains, or towering statues, or soaring palm trees, or elegant lamp posts, or handicraft markets. From up-and-coming breakdancers to jewelry-wielding hippies, each plaza offered unique insight into local culture.

We miss...that last picture: Without a care in the world, couples tossed themselves on the ground...or on benches...or on the sidewalk...just to express their everlasting love...or fulfill a burning desire in the moment. We call this PDA (public display of affection) here in Utah...and it's not as common.

We miss our obispado: Our loving bishopric devoted to the congregation of Godoy Cruz Centro. While smiling and laughing at times...we also knew when to be stern :)

We miss mate: The national steaming drink of hot water and herbs that accompanied each social gathering...even in the boiling summer months. Beyond the drink itself, we miss the moments and memories it created.

We miss el cielo: The blue Argentine sky that often turned into a brilliant horizon of billowing clouds of purples and oranges. We have yet to see such patterns here in the United States...but we were privileged with such views from our apartment's terrace.

Dallin misses las novias: Those wonderful girls that cared for Dallin throughout our trip...especially Mili (his first love).

We miss el invierno: The cool winter months of Mendoza. Dry leaves covered the ground, white snow covered the mountains, and little Dallin was wearing his coat.

We miss el verano: The hot summer months of Mendoza...when clothing was optional...for Dallin.

We miss las protestas: In a way, protests are comforting. They remind you that you're not the only one having a hard time! I admire the courage and resilience that such protesters demonstrated on a weekly basis. However, some protests were just poor excuses to cause chaos...while most protests ended with few results. Aside from the awful traffic jams and bus detours, we applaud those that protested in the name of security, basic rights, and teacher compensation.

We miss road trips: While we do have a car here in Utah, we enjoyed the road trips across Argentina on bus. We reserved our favorite seats - arriba, adelante - and admired the views, the weather, and the fellow passengers. We miss the maleteros asking for spare change. We miss the movie selection...from the mid-1980s. We miss the food...sometimes. We miss jumping off at each stop to explore each bus terminal for 5 minutes. We miss the famous rule of "No Solid Waste in the Restroom". What we don't miss? The passengers who ignored that rule.

We miss the construction workers - not the construction: While the thunderous noises of jackhammers and drills woke us up each morning...and each siesta...we must acknowledge the solid work ethic of the construction workers next door. These men worked long hours for minimal pay...all to return home and care for their wives and children.

We miss los caballos: The sound of horses trotting down our street...as anxious drivers honked their horns from behind. At least three times a day, these kids would gather all the cardboard boxes outside our apartment building...then move along to the next neighborhood.

We miss the greatest steak and ice-cream on earth: Period. From fine restaurants to backyard gatherings...from aged grills to firm box springs...these people know how to barbecue!!! As for the ice-cream...we recommend the White Chocolate and Dulce de Leche Granizado.

We miss the bidet: Enough said.

Our time in Mendoza taught us to place more value on experiences and relationships rather than material items or possessions. We learned that "home" is wherever we are as a family - no matter the neighborhood, the nation, or the continent. We learned to live with little...rather than live in abundance. We love our son. He impressed us. Dallin lived every moment to the fullest - greeting each stranger along the way - without ever realizing he was on an "international" trip. We love our dog. No matter the challenges ahead, she was there to lick your feet - and face - at the end of the day. In 2007, we had some choices to make. We could have purchased a home. We could have pursued a career. Instead, we purchased plane tickets and pursued a dream. We fulfilled a goal that we always had in mind...to return to Argentina once more. We did it. We loved it. And we're sure to to do it again.

Above all else: Gracias a Diego, Gabriela, Carla, Jair, Milagros, Lucho, Betina, Laura, Javier, Cindy, Gabriel, Sara, Ronald, Karen, Leandro, José, Carla, Augustín, Araceli, Aldin, Alondra, y todos los miembros del Barrio Godoy Cruz Centro. Nos enseñaron un montón sobre la vida...y por eso les queremos tanto.

Unique Artwork: A Must See!!!

I have been very eager to post these photos ever since our recent trip to Buenos Aires. Having provided translation services for FEN Hoteles since 2008, I have been privileged to stay at various FEN hotel properties at no cost (Esplendor/Dazzler). While in the nation's capital, I made a reservation at the Esplendor Buenos Aires Hotel. Why? Because I knew the artwork inside was exceptional! As custom projects provided by Mondongo Studios in Palermo, these pieces are beyond belief! As lovers of fine art - or peculiar art for that matter - we enjoyed this hotel to the fullest! And as for breakfast, well, you can see that Dallin had a great time in his pajamas!

Prior to departing Argentina, we made one final trip outside Mendoza and ventured into Buenos Aires and the northeastern province of Misiones. A region known for precious jewel mines and Jesuit ruins, the true landmark of Misiones is Iguazú National Park - home to the breathtaking natural wonder of 275 crashing cascades within a 3-mile area. As the largest falls in the world in terms of volume, Iguazú is also distinguished for the infinite butterflies that flutter through the billows of mist surrounding The Devil's Throat.

Iguazú - meaning "big water" in local Guaraní dialect - is shared between the international border of Argentina and Brazil. While the panoramic view from Brazil is spectacular, Argentina at least allows visitors to look into The Devil's Throat and be showered with rising mist. According to guides, "God made the waterfalls on Argentina's side. But he then sat down in Brazil to admire his work."

As the second-most requested destination in Argentina, the tourism industry has seen incredible growth in Puerto Iguazú (population 30,000). Several new hotel properties have been constructed in recent years - including the Amerian Iguazú. This resort-like establishment provided suite accommodations for Imagine Argentina. The view from the breakfast patio was incredible. The pools were magical...especially for an infant like Dallin. And hotel staff was more than helpful and warm throughout our much anticipated visit.

The dense rainforests and humid jungles of Misiones provide an impeccable glimpse of local wildlife roaming in their natural habitat: exotic birds, brilliant toucans, lizards, and the infamous coatie (a member of the racoon family notorious for stealing food from park visitors). Red dirt roads lead to observation decks and winding trails that traverse rivers and cliffs. From train rides to raft excursions, our trip was excellent! And above all else, we must express our gratitude to Vera - our dear friend and local guide.

One final note: The coaties are quite friendly towards children - as seen above - but it's just a trick to get closer to your food! As I was squatting down, one climbed onto my backpack, and before I could shake him off, another climbed into the diaper bag and pulled out a brand new bag of Lay's Potato Chips. Within seconds, the bag was destroyed by a dozen squealing little thieves!

Don't Cry For Me Argentina!

Yes, the phrase has been used a million times...but what better title to conclude our time here in Argentina? We are moving back home to Utah next week. The past month has been hard...quite emotional...and international moves never get easier. When we first returned to Argentina in Jan 2008, we knew there were challenges ahead. After all, we had lived here before...under various circumstances. However, we did not foresee the valuable experiences to be endured while back in Argentina. And of course, we overlooked the valuable friendships that would soon be formed.

As we were first preparing to leave Utah in 2008, we received mixed reactions from peers. Half believed we were nuts: "Why the heck are you going to Argentina?" The other half was proud: "I cannot believe you are going to Argentina! That is awesome!" Either way, we look back and see merit in both reactions...ha, ha.

We pursued this international adventure in order to change our environment, our rhythm, and our routine for a bit. This was not vacation - far from it - but it was another chapter of our lives carried out in a foreign place. It was both challenging and rewarding...and we sacrificed much more than we ever imagined. And in the end, we have no regrets!

So, we purchased our airline tickets in March, but decided to not inform our friends until recent weeks that we were leaving. After all, no need to create extensive farewells and goodbyes...it is much better to live and enjoy the moments at hand. So, what are some of our fondest memories so far?

-We relived our missions in a sense. We first met while serving as volunteer missionaries in 2001...in the Argentina Salta Mission of the LDS Church. Now, back in Argentina, we have shared similar moments together here in Mendoza. We have accompanied the local missionaries in sharing gospel lessons in the homes of new converts. We have organized exciting activities for the local youth groups. We have attended baptismal services, church dinners, and service projects. We have participated and contributed in our local congregation...and it has been wonderful. And, just like the mission, it is time to move on...but our prayers and best wishes will always be with the good people of Godoy Cruz Centro (especially the youth).

-We have seen Tania’s family together again. When we first returned, Aunt Karen and Uncle Ronald were soon married (Tania’s brother). We even had all the grandkids together in our home (Tania’s nieces and nephews). Dallin then met Aunt Carla for the first time (Tania’s sister) and even met his abuelos latinos at last (Tania’s beloved parents). In recent months, Dallin met his new cousin, Leandro (Uncle Ronald’s newborn son). Of course, Bella also welcomed Leandro into our home. We all celebrated the holidays together...despite December’s boiling summer sun. We will forever treasure such memories.

-We have made new friends...eternal friends. Together, we have shared numerous asados, trips to the river, bike rides, birthday parties, holiday celebrations, and emotional games of Jenga. These are the sweetest of people, always willing to give to others before themselves. While a mere "thank you" is never enough, we do express our sincere gratitude to those who welcomed us with open arms and helped make Mendoza our new home. Diego and Gabriela became second parents to Dallin, even watching him for an entire week while we took a brief vacation in Patagonia. As for Lucho, he became a second father to Bella, adopting her each time we went on a weekend trip. We are also grateful for Carla, Milagros, Jahir, Betina, Javier, Cindy, Laura, and so many others...including Cleto and Jack :)

We have been traveling the past week on another business trip/family vacation. We have not had access to internet until now. While we are departing Argentina this Tuesday, the blog entries will continue for weeks! We have plenty of stories - and photos - to share from our most recent journey:

Dinner Time in Mendoza

Dinner time is a special time. Here in Argentina, we prefer the traditional barbeque asado over most meals. There's quite a difference between the national asado...and it's North American counterpart: the cookout.

Argentina:
José - what time are we starting the asado?

Get here like three hours in advance. That way, we can drink and talk soccer while the fire burns.

United States:
Joe - when does the cookout start?

Burgers will be ready at 6:00.

Argentina:
Wow, José. What kind of firewood is that - alamo or quebracho?

Alamo. The good stuff - really enhances the flavor of the beef.

Of course, I'm having fun, but I will miss the local food as we return home to the United States. This week was highlighted with a special dinner at Azafrán, located along Emilio Civit - Mendoza's main street - overflowing with tourists and locals in the evening. The dinner was a gift from a good friend, and while gift cards do not exist down here, I was given a business card signed by the restaurant's wine manager...with a peso amount written next to his name.

The atmosphere is wonderful - a pleasant, yet rustic, establishment with just a handful of tables inside. Shelves stacked with spice jars line one wall, while dried flowers and garlic braids hang from the ceiling. Among the copper pots and pans are vintage photos of past Vendimia queens - those women voted as the official reinas of wine.

So, let's take a look at the menu...and get to the pictures!

Welcome to the Central Market of Mendoza. You will find such public markets in every major city across Argentina...and South America. Here, you will discover a brilliant variety of colors and smells...some more pleasant than others. Grocery stores provide the basic cooking ingredients, while these public markets offer aisle upon aisle of multiple spices and condiments: whole cloves, licorice root, and at least 60 variations of aji (chili powder). Fresh fish and clams arrive from Chile each morning, packed in ice-filled wooden crates that are later stacked behind the counter. Hundreds of dried fruits and nuts are available for clients, often perplexing the amateur shopper...and resident gringo. Stacks of fresh produce allure clients for their low prices, while piles of cow brain and chicken feet are displayed in the next booth. Head over to the meat stand and pick out a favorite cow tongue, or a scoop of moist kidneys. Looking for some sirloin or other special cut? Feel free to ask the neighborhood butcher, but be sure to speak up over the loud buzzing of the electric bone saw cutting through ribs. Your product will be delivered with a smile...but without gloves. Man, I love this place.

Let me brag about my husband...

If you follow our blog, you will remember reason #17 of why I love Wade: he is a great writer.

On Friday, February 13th, Wade was finishing one heck of a week. Sitting at the computer as he tried to leave everything in order before the weekend, he was faced with multiple chat windows, email messages, a screaming child, and a wife trying to push him out the door. Wade and Lucho had planned an overnight bike ride to Rio Mendoza...and even Lucho was waiting in our living room for Wade to finish up. So, what was the real hold-up?

Just three days prior, Wade learned of the Transitions Abroad International Expat Writing Contest. The magazine - now converted into a full webzine - focuses on the international appeal for students, professionals, and tourists to travel the world. The contest had been going on for more than 11 months...so Wade decided to submit an article before the deadline: Saturday, February 14. Can we say procrastination?

Being Wade, he sat down to share his insights and experiences in a 1500-word essay before the start of the weekend. Why now? As he said, "Just to challenge myself...and prove I can do it!"

Well...he did it. He finished the article, hit submit, grabbed his bag, jumped on his bike, and left for the weekend. I must be honest - I thought he was just adding one more thing to do on his list...one more unnecessary stress in his life.

Well, more than 2 weeks later, while we were visiting Bariloche, he received an email...and returned to our hotel room with a huge smile on his face - one I don't see too often (let's be honest - Argentina is having a crisis since we moved here...and some days could really use some good news). His article "I Always Knew I Would Return" was selected as a 3rd place winner! This is the second article he has published with Transitions Abroad (the first in 2006), but this one is much sweeter!

Current Events & The Passing of Alfonsín: Argentina's Father of Democracy

Quite the memorable week in Argentina. As shared in a previous post last week titled "Report: National In-Security", Argentina has been struggling with a soaring crime rate drawing attention across the globe. It is important to emphasize recent developments in Argentina this week:

-March 24: Día de la Memoria - a national holiday to recognize the importance of both human rights and democratic government in Argentina. Just 33 years ago - March 24th, 1976 - the democratic government of Argentina was overthrown as the Dirty War began under the control of a military regime. Thousands lost their lives and/or "disappeared" from Argentina.

-March 28: Plan de Seguridad - the government of Cristina Kirchner announces this afternoon a plan to increase domestic security against the rising crime rates (2009). AR$400 million pesos will be invested into the plan: AR$350 million in Buenos Aires...and AR$50 million in Mendoza. The plan includes the hiring of 5500 police and military officers (some retired), GPS systems, 5000 outdoor video cameras, and 21,500 cell phones to be used in a neighborhood watch network.

-March 31: La Muerte de Alfonsín - as of last night, Raúl Alfonsín has died (2009). Following the violence of the Dirty War, years under a military dictatorship, a disastrous battle with Great Britain over the Falkland Islands, and the collapse of free trade policies, Argentina was ready to return to democracy in 1983...and Alfonsín took office as the first democratic president of Argentina on December 10th, 1983. Under Alfonsín, the National Commission of Human Rights was formed and the full report of all findings were published under the title "Nunca Más". Trials against the former oppressors began in 1985 for human rights abuses.

*16,000 local residents of Buenos Aires have already visited the open casket of Alfonsín located inside El Congreso (as of one hour ago). The avenues are packed with thousands more still waiting outside...all hoping to pay their respects to the modern father of democracy.

-April 2: Día de las Malvinas - a national holiday to recognize the fallen heroes of Argentina during the tragic War of Falkland Islands. Just 27 years ago - April 2nd, 1982 - Argentina's first military troops occupied the islands to reclaim the territory from Great Britain. The war was an attempt by the military government to increase its patriotic appeal to the public...but it quickly ended in defeat on June 14th, 1982 with the death of 649 Argentine men. The defeat led to the eventual return of democratic rule...and the nation's first democratic president following the Dirty War: Raúl Alfonsín.

Quite the memorable week in Argentina. And the marches, strikes, and protests continue...all hoping to obtain peace, security, and protection as a desired result.

In mid-March, I had the true pleasure of greeting a travel group of 20 passengers eager to discover the wonders of Argentina. This specific trip, sponsored by The Wine Sellar & Brasserie of San Diego, and organized by Imagine Argentina and Grapevine Tours, proved to be a spectacular journey highlighting the elite vineyards of Mendoza, the dazzling tango of Buenos Aires, and the crashing cascades of Iguazú. After eight months of careful planning, we at last found ourselves together here in Argentina...and this was our excursion to Cerro Aconcagua - the tallest mountain peak in the Western Hemisphere:

The morning began with a peaceful visit to Bodega Ruca Malen, a modern establishment nestled below the majestic Andean peaks of Luján de Cuyo, dedicated to superior wine-making since 1998 and recognized for the following labels: Yauquén, Ruca Malén, and Kinién. Following a casual walk among the vines, under a brilliant blue sky, the group proceeded with a personal wine tasting session inside as conducted by residential expert, Carolina Macaya. Following a unique combination of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon blends, we continued towards the Chilean border.

Past the abandoned tracks and train stations of the former Trans-Andean Railroad, and the raging waters of Rio Mendoza, we found ourselves winding through the vibrant and diverse formations of local Andean valleys. Wildlife was rare, though we did manage to spot one roaming guanaco in-between the stone tunnels of the railway. Upon arrival to Aconcagua National Park, a pleasant hike just a few meters up the trail led us to Laguna de Horcones, where we settled on the grassy slopes and enjoyed a delightful afternoon picnic...each couple sharing a basket filled with salads, bruschetta, and bottles of wine. In the distance, Aconcagua pierced the horizon, towering at a height of 22,840 feet above sea level.

As we returned towards the residential zone of Vistalba, we stretched our legs at the local craft market near Puente del Inca. This natural bridge, formed centuries ago through the intense interaction between hot springs and ice, was once the site of a popular thermal resort and train station. In addition to the healing powers supposedly provided by the sulfurous waters of Rio Vacas, the river offers unique souvenirs for tourists, ranging from crusted wine bottles to "golden" tennis shoes left in the water for a period of weeks. Charles Darwin was quite impressed with the phenomenon during his personal expedition to Mendoza years ago.

Report: National In-Security

This is a report based on current events in Argentina. Having studied Argentine politics and human rights issues, including personal research conducted here during the past six years, I felt the need to address this subject. Fears of insecurity have escalated here in recent months, and this report will hopefully shed some light on current social arguments.

In mid-1974, following the death of Juan Domingo Perón, his third wife (and now widow) was left in charge of the Argentine Republic as the first female president. Isabelita proved to be quite inefficient in her new role. As with several nations during the Cold War, Argentina was experiencing the rampant flood of leftist views and socialist tendencies. The conservative elite became greatly concerned over the chaotic state of the nation. Following riots, protests, and organized acts of violence, the military at last decided to overthrow Isabelita...and the democratic government of Argentina. The end of democracy came on March 24, 1976. The Dirty War had begun.

For the next seven years, military generals and foot soldiers controlled the nation with brutality and force in order to eradicate all elements of communism. Similar practices swept across South America - Brazil (1964-1985), Chile (1973 - 1989), Uruguay (1973 - 1985). Universities soon became targets for police raids as students were often dragged out by their hair...never to be seen again. Homes were often ransacked as family members were taken outside and forced into the infamous fleet of Ford Falcons. Soccer stadiums were converted into concentration camps and torture centers. Hospitals, now under military control, were often filled with desperate mothers in search of their missing newborn babies (many of which were secretly given up for adoption). Approx. 30,000 victims were killed and/or "disappeared" under the regime - a number still disputed today.

In 1978, Argentina hosted the FIFA World Cup of Soccer. Several nations did not participate in the tournament as a sign of protest against the human rights abuses inside Argentina. While Argentina did win the World Cup title at home, many still argue whether the government "purchased" the championship in order to distract the world media (though Mario Kempes and others have denied such allegations).

In 1982, amidst civil unrest and economic turmoil, the Argentine government decided to strengthen its patriotic image by invading and reclaiming the Falkland Islands from Great Britain (located 300 miles east of Argentina's southern coast). Underestimating Britain's power and potential for retaliation, the Argentine military suffered a devastating defeat. Lasting just two months, the war claimed 907 lives (649 Argentines). The military regime began to crumble. Democracy at last returned to Argentina with Raúl Alfonsín in 1983.

For the next several years, mothers and grandmothers of the "disappeared" would quietly march in front of the presidential palace of Buenos Aires. Still carrying black-and-white photos of loved ones lost, these women continue to meet each Thursday morning and ask the painful question, "Dónde Están?"

So, why do we mention all of this? Because next Tuesday - March 24th - marks 33 years since the Dirty War began. It is now a national holiday - El Día de la Memoria - reserved as a date that Argentines must never forget. So, how is this related to current events? Well, three decades later, social arguments still ensue over human rights vs. military rule in order to manage crime.

Mendoza is the nation's fourth largest metropolitan area wi th an urban population under 900,000 in and around the capital. In 2007, there were 140 murders (*). In 2008, there were 125 murders (*). In addition, there have been a number of armed robberies and assaults with makeshift weapons. Private gated neighborhoods have been attacked. Hotel properties and patrons have been attacked. Department stores and banks h ave been attacked. Fine restaurants and diners have been attacked (some managed by fellow international expats). And just last weekend, six taxi drivers were attacked downtown.

The general outcry among local residents is that the government ignores the issue altogether. Promises are made to improve security...but such promises are broken and forgotten. The police are often blamed for allowing such crime to continue...even though their presence is felt in and around the capital 24 hours a day.

People have started to take justice into their own hands, something I predicted months ago. A few wanted criminals have been chased down and punished by angry victims and neighbors. In fact, just last month, downtown shoppers had the chance to unleash some of that fury on one thief caught in the act. On the morning of February 16, three men attempted to rob a jewelry store along San Martín Avenue - Mendoza's main street (*). The owner chased them off, and while two men managed to escape, the third was detained by an angry crowd of consumers and severely beaten before the police arrived.

According to the online blogs and forums of major Mendoza newspapers, this is what needs to be done in order to control local crime. For many, criminals and delinquent youth will not stop their violent activities unless “public justice” is served. The local community is divided into two general ideas:

-Bring Back La Mano Dura (Heavy Hand): The only solution to end the escalating crime wave is to use force…provided by a military and/or police regime . Capital punishment and quick arrests will decrease criminal acts of violence…similar to the Dirty War. An armed presence on every corner will return all things to order. An over-exaggerated focus on human rights has allowed young criminals to be untouchable, often released upon arrest thanks to the efforts and protection of human rights lawyers and government officials.

-Los Derechos Humanos (Human Rights): We must defend the rights and lives of all citizens. The Dirty War that once raged in Argentina and claimed the lives of thousands must not be in vain. Harsh punishment and military control is not the solution. We must help, fix, protect, and aide criminals and delinquent youth if we hope to save them. Government rule with an iron fist will only worsen the nation’s current condition.

Due to Argentina’s turbulent history with human rights – as described above – the current issue of insecurity is both heated and delicate. What lessons were learned in the 1970s? Is there a limit to human rights…especially for violent criminals? Is there a limit on public safety…or only on public justice? More importantly, how much longer will this go on…before one side crumbles?

Such concerns have stirred the hearts of proud Mendocinos in recent months. Speak to them and they will tell you, “My Mendoza was not like this 10 or 15 years ago. We used to leave our doors unlocked. Now I have bars on my windows and razor wire on my fence. This isn’t the Mendoza I grew up in.” Tania and I have seen such crimes firsthand…almost experiencing it ourselves last winter. While no solution has been found, civil unrest and impatience is visible.

This week, a peaceful “march against insecurity” was organized in downtown Mendoza (*). I attended…and walked in the front line, along with the most vocal citizens stating their grievances and fears, some even carrying the black-and-white photos of loved ones lost…in recent months. Following a few short blocks along San Martín Avenue, the small group of 50 quickly grew into a passionate crowd of hundreds, chanting the slogan, “Pueblo Unido – Jamás Será Vencido!” Such marches are planned for the next few weeks in Mendoza…and Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Rosario, Mar del Plata, etc.

Imagine Argentina: La Vendimia Collection

Another parade has come and gone. After months of strategic preparation, the streets of Mendoza at last erupted in early March with blaring music and vibrant colors; galloping gauchos and beautiful reinas. This is the international wine festival of Mendoza...also known as La Vendimia. Here is our travel log:

The annual festivities begin with a raucous parade through downtown, celebrating a fruitful harvest...and rejoicing in local culture. Small children and grown adults frantically wave their hands in the air, begging the pageant queens of each passing float to share their "emblems" of the harvest. In return, grapes and gourds are soon tossed into the crowd, gathered up in makeshift baskets attached to broom handles. Laughter is contagious as desperate onlookers struggle to catch the goods, only to eventually squash some of the fruit below their feet. With a sense of pride, smiling sons and daughters run to their parents to show off their newly acquired gifts: cantaloupes, garlic heads, and even bags of oregano (or so I think). Dallin found his own success...as you will see below.

Native cowboys, both young and old, trot down the avenue atop their horses. Decorated soldiers march to the rhythm of the himno nacional. Glamorous dance groups move, twist, and entertain the crowd, causing a reaction of cheers and applause. Each queen represents her provincial department aboard an extravagant float...competing for the adoration of neighbors - and politicians - in order to be voted the official Reina de la Vendimia later that evening. Vamos Godoy Cruz! Sos hermosa!

Tonight, almost 40,000 people pack the outdoor theater inside San Martín Park - Teatro Griego Frank Romero Day. A brilliant and dazzling performance begins with singers, dancers, and queens of years past. Vice President Cobos is present - and greeted with a roar of cheers. I believe Presidenta Kirchner is also here - yet welcomed with thunderous boos.

Following two hours of entertainment - with third row tickets thanks to The Grapevine - all seventeen queens are called out and line up on stage. We listen as the ballots are read. Who will be this year's "first lady of wine"? The crowd is wild...with fans screaming and yelling in support of their neighborhood queen. Massive banners and posters are waved in the air as provincial departments are read aloud: "Luuuuuuján!! Godooooooy Cruz!! San Marrrrrrrtín!!" And the winner is...San Martín by a landslide! Well, at least Godoy Cruz took second place. We now enjoy an impressive display of fireworks at 12:30AM...and Dallin is still awake!

Time to head home, face the traffic, and crash in bed. As for the rest of the week...well, it is the annual wine festival. Salud!

DAY 4: Los Siete Lagos...and More
After an early morning alarm, and a light breakfast of fruits and medialunas, we are prepared to head north and discover the 7 Lakes shared between Río Negro and Neuquen. Our expert guide spends the next 12 hours leading us through diverse terrain overflowing with lakes, rivers, forests, and wildlife. Despite morning rain and cloudy skies, we still enjoy a serene drive...down dirt roads and gravel trails. This same region was the recent site of Discovery Channel's Eco Challenge.

The 7 Lakes in order of appearance: Espejo, Correntoso, Escondido, Villarino, Falkner, Machonico, and Lakar. Alternating shades of blue and green are visible through towering pine trees. Large lookout points accommodate international travelers and backpackers, all eager for the perfect picture. At Lake Falkner, we walk along the sandy shore, picking wild Calafate berries from the surrounding shrubs.

Such an excursion includes brief visits to the prestigious towns of Villa La Angostura and San Martín de los Andes, both smaller replicas of Bariloche nestled in the southwest corner of Neuquen. These quaint destinations continue to welcome worldwide travelers...and international expats seeking permanent relocation.

Our drive continues, the lakes disappear in the distance, and the landscape gradually transforms into a picturesque steppe painted in hues of brown and green. Quiet sheep farms and moss-covered fences are now behind us. It's hard to believe we were just in Bariloche this morning. We keep our eyes peeled for wildlife...and we are not disappointed! We witness wild boars roaming through low scrub, elegant guanacos meandering across fields, and curious rheas peeking inbetween foxtail plants. As condors soar overhead, we are delighted to see pink flamingos bathing in the lagoon to our right.

Our journey concludes with peculiar stone formations in the mountains, resembling elephant seals and mountain lions. We return to our hotel. It is late...but not too late for a dozen warm beef empanadas.

DAY 5: Final Highlights
A pleasant sunrise greets us through the window. We take advantage of our final few hours to squeeze in some trademark highlights of Bariloche. A brief drive along Bustillo Avenue, past budget hostels and public schools, leads us to the vibrant red cable cars that ascend Cerro Otto (4600 feet above sea level). The view is unforgettable...a panoramic unparallel to anywhere else in the world.

Back in the civic center, we visit the fine chocolate shops one last time. We lie down on the grassy slope leading from the main plaza to the central pier...as multiple Saint Bernards look on inbetween photo sessions with cheerful kids. Our time is winding down...so we decide to get up and accomplish our final goal while here in northen Patagonia - eat grilled lamb at El Boliche de Alberto. To die for.

We grab our suitcase, head to the terminal, and take our favorite seats on board the Andesmar bus: upper level/ in front. We recline our seats, pull out the iPods, and prepare ourselves for the 17-hour return journey. The sun is shining through the side window, it's actually getting hot. No problem, we'll just adjust the....oh no, the air conditioning is broken. Not good.

DAY 3: Lake Nahuel Huapi of Bariloche
We head towards Puerto Pañuelo, driving along the coastal avenue of Ezekiel Bustillo, past public beaches, rolling hills, and quaint homes built of wooden shingles now stained with years of humidity. We board a large catamaran and sail Lake Nahual Huapi, the surface of which is now rippling under the strong morning winds. The sun is now peeking through the clouds, revealing tints of blue and green in the water around us. Flocks of seagulls glide overhead, searching for those passengers willing to donate a cracker or two.

Our first stop is the Quetrihue Peninsula. Here, organized trails wrap through the enchanting Arrayanes Forest, overflowing with these slender cinnamon-colored trees. At the touch, these twisted limbers are quite cold due to a faint bark of just 1 mm that protects their exterior.

We embark once more aboard our catamaran, sailing past weathered piers, jagged mountains, and clusters of pine trees that line the passing shores. We arrive to Victoria Island, once named Nahuel Huapi ("Tiger Island") among indigenous tribes before the arrival of European settlers. A dense pine forest has overtaken the island. Most trees appear dead and dry with the exception of verdant needles that grace their towering tops as each one competes for sunlight. Strong sequioas also grow here, providing further shade for resident foxes and deer, including the rare pudú which first inspired Walt Disney to create "Bambi".

This evening, we explore a few high-end residential neighborhoods, all defined by stylish cabin-like homes characteristic of the region. Unlike larger cities of Argentina, like Mendoza and Buenos Aires, these homes do not use barb wire or razor sharp fences for protection. Instead, such homes offer small wooden gates and welcoming stone paths that lead to their front door.

Mendoza to Neuquen to Río Negro: Of the 970 photographs taken during our recent trip, we have included a few select images to depict our breathtaking journey inside Argentina's famed northern Patagonia. Our final destination was San Carlos de Bariloche and the remote outposts that surround this majestic village.

The hardest part of this trip was leaving Dallin in Mendoza with some dear friends. The easiest part of this trip? Being alone without Dallin...in a beautiful hotel with a lake view! As you might know, Tania is half-Mapuche (maiden name Nahuelcura), so it was wonderful to experience a little indigenous culture as Mapuche dialect accounts for 90% of the names for local lakes, forests, islands, etc.

DAY 1: From Mendoza to the South
Last night, we arrived to the local terminal and boarded our Andesmar bus, prepared to travel 17 hours south into the northern limits of Argentina's famed Patagonia. As we departed Mendoza, with iPods in hand, we reclined our favorite seats (upper level/ in front) and enjoyed the open landscape as seen through the massive windshield before us. As raindrops and splattered bugs slowly ruined our view, we turned our attention to the television screens overhead...only to be disappointed with the evening's film selections: Nights of Rodanthe and Madagascar 2. With lightning storms in the distance, and the peculiar smell of sweet grass in the air, we drifted off to sleep...until we were stopped at the Neuquen provincial border and searched by eager police officers and their German Shepherd sidekicks. With a bus free of drugs, we continued on our trip...

DAY 2: Arrival to Río Negro
The sun is now shining through the windshield. We are waking up...yet a subtitled Kangaroo Jack on the television overhead is forcing us to close our eyes once again. The overnight trip has brought us a new climate much different from the boiling summer heat of Mendoza. The bus windows are now covered in condensation, our feet are cold and stiff, and the mother sitting across the aisle is preparing steaming mate to share with her daughter. We stop at the bus terminal of Neuquen, pick up a few extra passengers, then continue southward into the Río Negro province...but not without welcoming one more drug search from eager police officers and new German Shepherd sidekicks.

We are getting closer to our final destination. We have seen signs for Traful, Confluencia, and other known outposts of northern Patagonia. We are counting down the kilometer markers to San Carlos de Bariloche. At last we arrive...to a small terminal outside the city. The sky is gray and the forecast calls for afternoon drizzles.

A blue-and-white taxi cab takes us to our downtown hotel. Hotel Panamericano provides a spacious room for us both - free of charge - with a calming view of the lake just two blocks ahead. Pinching ourselves in disbelief that we are finally here, we crack open the massive window to invite the frigid outdoor winds inside. We then grab our camera and leave.

Bariloche is derived from the term vuriloche, meaning "people on the other side" in Mapuche dialect. Such indigenous tribes, scattered across southern Chile, knew of this divine destination centuries ago, but intentionally kept it hidden from initial European explorers. At last, in 1717, Jesuits crossing through these Andean valleys established their mission along the shores of Lake Nahuel Huapi. In the late 19th-century, German immigrant Carlos Wiederhold discovered Bariloche, eventually establishing his own local general store. The resort town of San Carlos de Bariloche was born. Austrians and Germans soon made their home here, creating an alpine-style civic center, and thus, a warm and inviting "Switzerland of South America". Known as Argentina's Lake District, this region is also considered the ski capital of Latin America, and is located inside Nahuel Huapi National Park - the largest of Argentina, and the first ever on the South American continent.

We spend the afternoon and evening exploring the heart of Bariloche. Government offices and national banks are housed in beautiful buildings of traditional stone and wood. The grass is green and free of litter - a rare sight to see in much of Argentina. Araucaria trees are trademark evergreens of downtown, often referred to as "monkey puzzle trees" for their unique design. Breweries and chocolate shops line narrow avenues, as winter lights in the shape of snowflakes and bells illuminate our evening stroll. As we admire chocolate workers perfecting their culinary craft, we are offered several free samples of white and dark confections, all of which further contribute to the feeling of Christmas back home.

At least that's how we interpreted the parrot's glare as we arrived to the Mendoza Zoo this morning. This vibrant red bird, named Madonna, sits perched on the front gate, supervising all visitors as they walk past the entrance. Perhaps she remembers our last visit from one year ago...and my experience with the elephant? Refresh your memory here.

As an activity designed for the youth of our local congregation, we arrived to the zoo to begin our day. The boys and girls of Barrio Godoy Cruz Centro were not just going to see the different animals inside...they were going to embark on a scavenger hunt! Divided into two teams, each side received a list of 20 items - some obvious, some more difficult: Find 1 Elephant, Find 3 different monkeys, Shake the hand of a stranger, Pick up a piece of trash, etc. But here's the catch - each team had a digital camera...and pictures were required for every item on the list! Needless to say, the kids had a blast!

We required both teams to locate and photograph 1 Llama, 1 Vicuña, 1 Guanaco. Can you tell the difference?

We also took the opportunity to discuss the Creation and all the wonderful animals on earth. While I say this in fun, I do sometimes like to think that God took a paintbrush, a pallet of brilliant colors, and with infinite creativity, designed each and every creature on the planet. He must have had a blast with all those birds...just look at that beak!

Afterwards, we headed across the street for a traditional - you guessed it - asado argentino! And what is that at the bottom? That's a ñandú egg being cooked over the coals - a smaller version of the ostrich. It's basically an egg on steroids.

And as with any summer activity, we finished the afternoon with a game of soccer. My boy dribbled the ball across the entire field! The young men quickly formed a pick-up game with other youth nearby, using rocks as "goal posts". I played in flip-flops...and thus used that as an excuse for my pathetic skills.

After some thoughtful planning, I left downtown Mendoza on Friday the 13th and headed towards Luján de Cuyo - past the colorful vineyards, towering poplars, and premium wine cellars southwest of the capital. Lucho, a good friend and outdoor enthusiast, rode along on this scenic bike ride that extended past Blanco Encalada. Here are some highlights...

It felt wonderful to escape the city and return to the great outdoors - clean air, green fields, and mountain peaks in the background. In many ways, I felt like I was back home...with natural elements of both Virginia and Utah. The open countryside offers a unique variety of smells - fresh cut grass, wine fermentation, burning compost, and a combination of onion and garlic fields. For those of you familiar with Argentina's interior, burning compost is a common scent in the air (especially in Salta and Tucumán). Before arriving to our campsite, we veered off the highway and entered a quiet community similar to those rural outposts of the northwest. There, we packed our bags with drinks and cheap hot dogs.

Lucho knows the area better than most. He led us down a bumpy trail of rocks and dust before finding a small island of sand resting along the Mendoza River. Colas de zorro (foxtail plants) lined the shore, with a clear view of the Andean foothills in the distance.

After searching for firewood, we set up our tent and headed into the river for a late afternoon swim. The frigid temperature didn't bother us much, but the current was much stronger than expected. We have proof...

Before leaving home, I was in a rush to turn in some final writing assignments. Being in such a hurry, Tania decided to help out by packing my bag. Unfortunately, she forgot to include my flip-flops. Lucho let me borrow his as we ventured into the water in search of some possible "replacements". Within 10 minutes, we found 8 random flip-flops stuck along the riverside weeds. No pairs. No matches. While kind of gross, it does make you wonder how many one-legged swimmers actually enjoy the river?

With the sun going down, it was time to start the fire...and dinner: those good ol' cheap hot dogs.

The fire lasted a good five hours. A few of the dead roots we found made for some interesting firewood. We then fell asleep...under a near full moon and clear night sky. That far from the city, almost every star can be seen.

The next morning brought a brilliant sunrise across the river's rippled surface. We packed up early and jumped back on our bikes.

The return trip home was a quiet ride along tree-lined avenues...with those dang Andes Mountains always showing up in every photo! To finish our ride, we pulled off the road and entered a picturesque vineyard just outside Luján. With the radiant sun overhead, we scoured the vines for Mendoza's trademark grapes. After taking a few pictures, mingled with the occasional tasting, we got back on the road and ended our latest journey here in western Argentina.

Once again, we must recognize the creative efforts of Argentina youth. Here, in San Juan, we find ourselves walking towards the bus terminal for our return trip home. However, something grabs Dallin's attention...and we find ourselves admiring these Argentine West Coast Choppers :)

These young men rebuild - or redesign - old bicycles with some very unique features. They then head to the bustling terminal to sell them for profit. The striking orange bike above comes complete with solid black rims and a customized blowtorch on the side - a true necessity for every outdoor excursion.

Below, we find our next model - a jet black bicycle with one very important feature: speakers! Yes, the next time you're on the run, be sure to bring your regetón with you...so the whole neighborhood can hear! Dallin found this specific model quite fascinating...

This year - 2009 - marks 10 years since Tania and I first arrived to Argentina's northwest as full-time missionaries. What a joy it was to labor among the kindest of people inside the region's most humble communities. Our time in Salta left an everlasting impression on our lives...and the lives of others.

Unfortunately, today's news reports from Salta indicate a massive mudslide has devastated the town of Tartagal in the northern limits of the province (outside Bolivia). More than 10,000 residents have been evacuated following torrential rainfall...which swept away a principle bridge in town.

We know that many of our friends back home are quite familiar with this area. I clearly recall such rainstorms in the north, often flooding villages and toppling makeshift homes. May we pray for the safety of those affected in Tartagal...a region often overlooked.

Curbside Car Service

The stoplight turns red...which is their green light to start working.

They wake up early, head into the city, and stake their claim on the most convenient street corner downtown. This is their spot. This is their routine. There are several other street corners...but the congested avenues are already taken.

With squeegees in hand, and a bucket of watered down glass cleaner, these three cousins anxiously wait for cars to line up every 30 seconds - their new "potential clients". The cousins quickly weave around cars, offering their curbside service to all those interested. In most cases, drivers shoo them away with a brisk brush of the hand, or simply roll up their windows to avoid contact. The light then turns green...and they return to their corner and wait.

A few drivers might allow them to clean the occasional windshield. In such cases, all three cousins rush over as a team and hastily soak, wash, and dry all the windows on the car - quite the 20 second workout! Some drivers offer a few coins in return. Others offer cigarettes. Some say, "I'll pay you tomorrow"...while others simply drive off. Credit cards are not accepted :)

Together, as a team, they earn about U$1.00 every 30 minutes. At the end of the day, they split the money among themselves before returning home. One is a father of 2 kids. None of them go to school.

While this might not be a dignified job for some, at least they are not stealing. Instead, they are making a living in a way most people could never imagine. As one cousin told us, "We come from a bad place. But that doesn't mean we aren't good people."

It might not be pretty, but this is an integral part of local culture in Argentina...and we admire it.

We spent Wednesday up in the mountains at Cacheuta Water Park. We had wanted to visit for some time and finally decided to hit the road with some friends.

The park was quite clean. A casual "lazy river" wraps around the main pool with some amazing riverside scenery. Andean foothills embrace the park below with poplar trees outlining the perimeter. Picnic tables and grills are set up under the trees with plenty of room for traditional asados. As for the one water slide, I (Wade) got stuck in the middle and had to scoot myself down. Someone obviously tore down the sign that said, "No Large Gringos".

Here we are in the thermal pools located on the upper level. Several pools are scattered inside the park, all varying in temperature. We just about fell asleep in this one.

And after a long day in the sun, we all returned to our table to feast...well, except for one.

For those of you that have spent a summer inside Argentina - during the hottest months between December and March - this is a good reminder of how hot the weather can be. And for those of you trying to imagine Argentina in the summer, use this post as a reference. It's just not right for beads of sweat to rise from every pore on your forearm.

With the rising temperatures, neighborhood kids will "unlawfully" turn on the local fire hydrants five or six times a day. It's an easy way to cool off before moving along. All you need is a friend (to be on the lookout for police) and a stick (to turn the underground valve)...and you've got a geyser!

The Harvest is Approaching...

While most do not consider grapes to be symbols of the yuletide season, such fruit is indicative of December here in Argentina. With summer in full swing, and the radiant sun overhead, local valleys are bursting with color as grapes begin to fill the numerous vineyards cultivated in the shadow of the Andes Mountains. The harvest is quickly approaching...which will be celebrated in early March during La Vendimia.

This past week, we had the wonderful opportunity to visit Tania's family in the sun-drenched province of San Juan. Their backyard, while small and quaint, is overflowing with lemon trees, peach trees, and even an obnoxious rooster. But the highlight is the shaded patio constructed by my father-in-law. Made of broken tree limbs, the canopy extends into the backyard from the main house, providing shade for those who would like to spend the afternoon drinking mate. At this time of year, the canopy provides plenty of grapes hanging from the multiple vines that wrap around the twisted branches of the canopy. Here are some "homegrown" photos...

just another day...for you and me...in Buenos Aires

So, I was back in Buenos Aires once again. Another long overnight bus ride...a quick overnight stay in the city...and a long trip back home.

While there, I had the privilege to share lunch with several members of our American Embassy - what wonderful people! On Friday (for Halloween), the Embassy was decorated with plenty of spiderwebs and ghouls so that American children (of government employees) could enjoy an old-fashioned haunted house and some afternoon trick-or-treating. In fact, some employees were wearing the traditional black and orange colors (with a few festive sweaters). It was nice to see traditions from home...despite the 90 degree weather!

So, as always, it is time to post pictures of another new destination inside Buenos Aires. This time, I spent a few hours inside the Japanese Gardens of Palermo. This is a very peaceful retreat despite the hustle and bustle of such a large metropolis. Enjoy the pictures...and a special treat at the end!

Right in front of the US Embassy is a beautiful open park. Many professional "dog walkers" come here in the afternoon. This man alone is in charge of 40 different dogs from owners across the city - French Bulldogs, Retrievers, Boxers, etc. As you can see, they are quite friendly and often chase down others inside the park to play catch. The most amazing part? None of the dogs had leashes!!!

This Month in The ENSIGN...

Yesterday, I had the true pleasure to accompany a very special group of friends into the vast wine region of Uco Valley, Mendoza. Ann Monson Dibb (Second Counselor, LDS Young Women General Presidency) and Silvia H. Allred (First Counselor, LDS Relief Society General Presidency) were here in Mendoza to provide a training session for multiple stakes.

President and Sister Lindahl (LDS Mendoza Argentina Mission) asked me to come along for a day tour and provide some historical insight as we drove towards Tupungato and the flourishing vineyards of Bodega Salentein. While none of us drink wine, we did enjoy a personal visit through the luxurious wine cellars of Salentein, a Dutch investment now attracting tourists worldwide for its modern design and fine art museum.

It was a joy to hear the testimonies and experiences of both sisters. This week alone, they will provide training sessions in Mendoza, Salta, Buenos Aires, and parts of Uruguay and Paraguay. Both Sister Allred and Sister Dibb are true examples of service as they continue to commit their time and efforts on behalf of the church. We shared great stories and good laughs...especially when learning more about Sister Dibb's dear father!

And where did we go for lunch? La Tupiña, of course!

Another Day in Buenos Aires...

Despite the long distance, I have been fortunate enough to occasionally travel to Buenos Aires for business. No matter how many times I have visited in the past decade, I find myself exploring something new (or at least revisiting something with a better camera).

Following an overnight bus ride (13 hours) and an awful, dramatic German film along the way (new trend?), I arrived to the capital and quickly headed to my hotel. I did not have too much time for sightseeing, but I did review a few spectacular hotels. In between meetings and clients, I took advantage of both the bus system and underground subway. While waiting for the subway, and especially when crammed inside, I noticed a unique smell in the air - the subtle blend of sweat, chimichurri, and cigratee smoke. Yes...spring is in the air :)

I thought I would post a few photos to highlight some additional Buenos Aires landmarks:

El Ateneo Grand Splendid is the nation's largest bookstore, and recognized as the second most glamorous in the world (the first being a restored 800-year-old church in Holland). Along Santa Fe Avenue, one can enter this four-story libreria and browse through thousands of texts, movies, and varieties of music. The original theater was inaugurated in 1919 (with a beautifully painted ceiling by Nazareno Orlandi). The bookstore opened in 2000, using former balconies as cozy literature nooks and the former stage as a coffee shop.

Café Tortoni, now celebrating its 150th anniversary, is a trademark restaurant of the nation's capital. Inaugurated by French immigrants along Mayo Avenue in 1858, Café Tortoni still draws thousands of tourists and locals for its great food and lovely interior (which draws you back into decades of historical icons and cultural pastimes). Besides Storni and Gardel, Jorge Luis Borges was also a regular guest, enjoying a daily breakfast inside.

Termed "La Docta" for its educational development and academic appeal, Córdoba is also referred to as Argentina's second capital. While the city center is crowded with office towers, government buildings, and endless apartments, the numerous locals also pride themselves on provincial history. First founded in 1573 by Spanish explorers, Jesuit missionaries arrived shortly after, dedicating the national university in 1621 (the oldest in Argentina). The Jesuit order, along with Carmelites and Franciscans, constructed multiple religious edifices across this central province: cathedrals, chapels, convents, and estancias. The capital of Córdoba combines both modern construction and colonial architecture with baroque and indigenous elements. The Jesuit Block, in the heart of downtown, was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. The lush countryside offers narrow dirt roads, rolling green hills, and several religious sites. Alta Gracia, one of many rural towns, was also home to a young Che Guevara in 1932. It was his hope to escape Buenos Aires and breath the fresh air of Córdoba in order to relieve his asthma.

LDS Church History:

In 1925, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints gathered in Buenos Aires to dedicate the entire continent of South America in preparation for Mormon missionary service. While multiple chapels were constructed in the following decades, the LDS temple in Argentina was not dedicated until 1986 (in Buenos Aires). Many sacred ordinances of the LDS faith are only available inside this religious edifice. For many years, church members scattered across Argentina have traveled great distances to visit Buenos Aires and enter the temple.

As Tania and I served as missionaries in Argentina's northwest, we witnessed how local church members often saved their money for years before taking this important trip (a distance of 800 miles from Salta). There are currently 128 LDS temples in operation worldwide. Such temples are established based on regional population of church members and other factors. The construction of such temples are financed through the tithes and generous offerings of faithful members (cumulative, not regional).

This weekend, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints gathered worldwide to hear the semi-annual General Conference. In April and October of each year, religious leaders of the Mormon faith share important messages and principles with church members across the globe (a live satellite broadcast from Salt Lake City to nearly 100 nations and translated into more than 80 languages).

Just yesterday, 5 additional LDS temples were announced during General Conference: Philadelphia, Kansas City, Calgary, Rome...and Córdoba, Argentina. There are currently 300,000 members of the LDS faith inside Argentina. We are so happy for the local members here that have waited so long, in patience and faith, for this second temple in their homeland. Construction will begin shortly.

This blog has become a wonderful outlet for both Tania and I to discuss our life and share our moments. We do not openly market and/or promote businesses on this blog - however, there are special exceptions. I believe it is always necessary to recognize exceptional service when possible - especially when such service far exceeds your initial expectations.

In 2006, I returned to Argentina on business. I spent two weeks building contacts and friendships across the country - artists, managers, chefs, etc. While in Mendoza, I had the pleasure to visit La Tupiña - a unique bistro nestled below the majestic peaks of the Andes. After years of eager anticipation, I returned yesterday (2008) with three dear friends who have recently relocated to Argentina. What appears to be a quaint adobe cottage along a narrow gravel road is actually one of the finest dining experiences we have ever had. I use "experience" because the word "meal" does not suffice.

From downtown Mendoza, you must travel south along Ruta 40 before turning west towards Tupungato - a developed town nearly 100km from the provincial capital in the heart of Valle de Uco. Located just outside Tupungato (in Gualtallary), La Tupiña welcomes travelers for afternoon lunch (reservations a good idea).

La Tupiña signifies the black cauldron which rests inside over an open fire - a common gathering place for dear friends in the countryside. Upon arrival, you will be greeted with the warm hospitality of both cooks and servers, inviting you to join them around the cauldron as master chefs prepare fine h'orderves and appetizers before your eyes - roasted eggplant, empanadas criollas, grilled mozzarella with sundried tomato, and a "shot" of gourd soup. You are encouraged to mingle and ask questions as the chef clearly explains his choice of ingredients and methods of preparation.

After savoring the flavor of several distinct spices and herbs, you will return to the main dining area and unwind on a leather sofa, turning the pages of local wine books that sit before you. In just a few short minutes, a new round of h'orderves begins, each served with a gracious smile. A personal favorite: miniature bowl of soft yam served over ground beef and onion, sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar.

Your official table has now been prepared and you are invited to dine outdoors on the patio. Amidst a peaceful vineyard, and surrounded by towering poplars, you will now begin with the main course - vegetable canoles, roasted potatoes, and seasoned matambre (flank steak). Each and every dish is served with an insightful explanation.

As for desert, you will be treated with rice pudding and other sweet miniature concoctions. However, it is the soft sorbet inbetween that will not only cleanse your pallet, but delight your taste buds: strawberry with specks of black pepper + pear with a pinch of thyme.

Each course is paired with fine wine - burgundy Malbec, Cabernet, Merlot - all of which are carefully crafted inside Altus, a charming bodega (winery) located directly across the gravel road. As La Tupiña is part of the Altus establishment, you are encouraged to combine your culinary experience with a private tour conducted inside the winery - a staple activity of the local tourism industry.

*For my fellow non-wine drinkers, you will be happy to know they serve all Coca-Cola products...and a very pleasant lemonade :)

With such a peaceful rural setting, paired with the rustic elegance of the interior (dried flowers, vibrant gourds, warm paints of orange and yellow hues), La Tupiña captures both intimate ambience and cultural tradition.

Enanitos Verdes: EN VIVO!

To celebrate Tania's birthday early, I purchased tickets to see Los Enanitos Verdes here in Mendoza. As native mendocinos, the group was coming home to perform at Bustelo Auditorium - just a few blocks from our home. Despite Marciano's apparent new look (reminiscent of Jerry Garcia), the band put on an incredible show until 12:30AM last Friday, September 12th. We only recorded a few clips with our camcorder.

Suddenly, during the third song, a frantic red laser beam started jumping around my head. Security must have seen the camcorder, and thinking I would sell bootleg copies of the tape all over town, they made me turn it off (which you will see near the end). Irony: street vendors were selling pirate music of the band just outside in the hallway.

The concert was amazing. Felipe must have changed his guitar at least 12 times during the show - including a neon green "glow in the dark" guitar for Tu Cárcel. Marciano would make a different toast between each song, and even invited a bunch of young girls on stage to sing Luz de Dia with the band. My favorite highlight was watching teenagers and their aging parents jumping up and down together with their illuminated cell phones during Guitarra Blanca.

Basically, we lost our internet service at home this past Wednesday morning - no explanation, no reason. Despite numerous calls to different "customer service" numbers, Telefonica will not assist us for at least 96 hours - this is their company policy.

You do not have much of a choice when the company you have basically runs a monopoly across the nation. So, as with many of our friends, we just sit and wait.

For now, we have the joy of using public cyber cafes in the city.

Travel Slide Show #3 - Jujuy

While I spent very little time in Jujuy during my volunteer mission, my dear wife spent several months in Jujuy as a missionary herself. In mid-2005, as part of an independent research project, we visited Argentina's northernmost province together to travel along both Ruta 40 and Ruta 9 in hopes of discovering the hidden treasures and villages of the Humahuaca Canyon. Now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this province offers indigenous fortresses, historic museums, adobe chapels, and dusty roads. Once territory of Perú (a key factor in understanding local traditions), select churches still display colonial images of Cusco along their walls.

So, here are a few stops to make during your trip: Visit the yellow adobe church of Tumbaya. See the hillside cemetery of Maimara, set against the zigzag patterns of Paleta del Pintor. Admire the Hill of Seven Colors that embraces Purmamarca. Explore the recreated fortresses and corrals of Pucara de Tilcara. And make it to Humahuaca before 12:00 noon so you can witness San Francisco Solano appear from the local clock tower to bless the central plaza (the world's first animated saint).
